I have never been so disappointed in a book. The first book I loved, but if it was the same quality as this book, I must have been drunk or on something because what on earth was this?
Reckless is the second book following the viral book Powerless. After killing the King and having to go on the run, Paedyn has to find a way to survive when the entire kingdom is coming after her. Her biggest problem though, is the Enforcer, Kai Azer, the man who she fell in love with but now has him hunting her down at the command of the new King, Kitt Azer.
God I was so excited because I loved the first book. There was a decent romance, interesting plot and some great banter throughout. This book has however been very disappointing.
I'll start off with the characters. Pae was a very strong character in the first book. Witty mouth and can stand her ground. She still had her quick wit, but for pretty much the entire book, she is not as strong or independent. It's like her entire character crumbles after 50 or so pages which really is a shame. I did like her character quite a bit in the first book.
Kai was still kind of the same character and I'm thankful because he still has his charm and I did like the banter between him and Pae even if it did get a bit cliché at times. However, aren't you being sent to capture her? I know that it's meant to be a “they're meant to hate each other but they can't help but love each other” kind of thing but I found it to be so superficial and a bit naive in a way. It was frustrating to read at times because it just didn't suit the mood.
Kitt had his POV scattered throughout the book too. Many people have said it was boring and uninteresting. I did find it a bit dull at times but I think it is important to see his POV and how he's coping. I think many readers just want to hear about Kai and Pae and ignore everything else which is something I disagree with.
The romance in this book was meh. It was incredibly rushed, hot and cold but not in a good way, and just overall very badly written. That first kiss? Yeah I rolled my eyes cause literally what? The banter was good, I'll give Roberts that but it just isn't enough really.
The world building was pretty much non-existent. Remember how this was also a fantasy book? Me neither, cause this book had NOTHING to do with the fantasy aspect other than maybe a few scenes at the beginning where it was just mentioned.
Plot wise, there is none. The first 100 pages were alright. This was when Kai was tracking down Pae but after that? It's them walking back to Ilya. That's. It. There was nothing to really grip me with the plot and I found myself just getting bored.
The ending shocked me, I admit it. But not in a way where my mind was blown out of this world with fascination and excitement. I was actually blown out of my mind with how stupid I found it. Maybe if there was more description in the decision making Kitt had to come to this conclusion, but now I'm just irritated and confused.
Last thing that infuriated me was the writing. I know this is a YA book but the writing was so god awful. It was immature and rushed and if I see the words “pretend” or “insufferable” again I'm burning those pages and the dictionary pages with those words in it. If I took a shot everytime I read those words, I'd be blackout drunk. Maybe that's what happened when I read the first book because I really do not remember it being this atrocious.
Either way, I'm very disappointed in this book and I don't know if I can will myself to read the third and final book in the trilogy. I was so disappointed as I read it because my expectations already weren't that high and this just stomped, crushed and burnt any further expectations I have for Roberts’ writing.
If you want a quick, easy read this book would be for you. Just don't expect too much in terms of writing, characters, plot or pretty much anything. Only thing you can expect is decent banter between the characters and that's about it.
