The Rebel in Violet: Book One in the Freedom for Rhethos Series by Hannah R. Lyon

5.0

The Rebel in Violet, the first book in the Freedom for Rhethos trilogy, was an amazing fantasy adventure full of twists and turns, mysterious magic, a rebellion against tyrannical leadership, and epic battles.

I loved exploring the world of Rhethos for the perspective of so many of the amazing characters in this world. The world-building is rich and immersive, yet easy to follow along with and pulls you right into the story from the first page. The characters in this story are wonderfully complex and dynamic. They are truly one of my favourite parts of this book. Angelyn and Will were my favourite characters. Angelyn is an amazingly fierce, and strong-willed character. I loved her passion for her home and the life she has worked so hard to build, albeit a bit flawed, and her determination to ensure the safety of her son. Her interactions with Will, the leader of the rebellion were some of my favourites in this book. They challenge and push each other to be better. She makes him question the way he acts in the name of the rebellion, while he shows her that the actions she takes intending to preserve everything that she has built, are fundamentally flawed. I am excited to see how their relationship continues to grow in the next book.

The mysterious and unpredictable blood magic was the other part of this story that I most enjoyed. The magic system in this system was really unique. Fueled by blood and ancient runes carved into the skin of the wielder, the magic doesn't always yield the desired or expected results. It feels like there is still a lot more to learn about this magic. I am excited to see how it develops in a couple of characters who are learning about the abilities they possess.

The end of this book leaves a lot of unanswered questions. I can't wait to see where book two takes these amazing characters and cheer on the rebellion as they continue to fight for freedom in the beautiful lands of Rhethos.

Thank you Hannah for the audiobook copy of The Rebel in Violet. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
