Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey
3.0
A really entertaining, suspenseful space opera but boy am I glad that the show diversified the cast of characters earlier in the storyline than the books seem to do. Book 1 of the series does a great job with the world building and establishing rounded characters that have contrasting approaches and worldviews but overlapping interests. But because the only POV characters are two men, Miller and Holden, the only women with any profile in the book are portrayed through their eyes, as potential love/sex interests. The book also doesn't do any favours for destigmatizing sex work in how mentions of "hookers" and "prostitutes" are used in similes throughout. You could argue it's a manifestation of the gritty, dystopian sci-fi universe where all kinds of workers are treated poorly, but it felt more to me more like the authors just never really thought about it.
