Wow, this is going to be a book that I am recommending to people all year!

A series of interconnected short stories that show different parts of Kara, the main character’s life as she grows up in the Eglinton West neighborhood of Toronto. We see her relationship with her mother, grandparents, and friends change through time. We see her experience being the child of immigrants, and being Black in a group of white people.

I loved the way that Reid-Benta wrote Kara’s relationships with her family. For being a relatively short book, you really got a sense of their complicated relationships and the stories of the family members as well.

I live and grew up in Toronto, and it was really cool to see so many places I recognized in the book. It felt almost extra impactful to read a story set in a place that you recognize about an experience that is very different to yours.

I definitely recommend checking this out! I think it’ll be one of my top reads of the year.
