Ginger Goodwin: A Worker's Friend by Laura Ellyn
5.0
This stunning graphic novel tells an important story from the region where I grew up, about a labour activist named Ginger Goodwin who was shot by police and became a martyr for trade unionists, particularly the miners in Cumberland, B.C. But even as someone from the area, and a labour activist myself, I didn't know much else about Ginger - his life, his health, his organizing work or otherwise.
I'm so glad Laura Ellyn helped illustrate that background, in a thoughtful, nuanced and well-researched retelling of events that prioritizes oral histories and acknowledges the moments in Ginger's life that we're still uncertain about.
This is a book I'd recommend to not just Comox Valley residents or ex-pats, not just union activists, but really any graphic novel fans with an interest in working class history or class relations today.
