Love in the City by Melissa Baldwin

3.0

Averaging at about a 3/5 for me. This is a long collection (1405 pages according to my kindle app)! Some of the stories didn’t mesh with me, but I can see why others would love them. Definitely a fun set of stories all the way around!

A breakdown of the stories:

All’s fair in love and war by Sariah Wilson
4/5 - Jane has the chance to enter a competition to show off her baking skills, in hopes of winning the prize to start her own bakery. If only she didn’t have to share work space and compete with Bennett. If only it wasn’t the guy that she used to have a crush on. If only he hadn’t then stolen her dream job from her. It’s a cute (and predictable) story!

Love potion by Becky Monson
2/5 Ally buys a love potion while at the fair as a joke, but then accidentally spills it on herself on the way to work. Suddenly her office crush starts to pay attention to her, so does it actually work? Or is this even what she actually wants in the end? Is this the right guy for her? I didn’t care for it so much, but I can see why others would enjoy it. I just thought it was a bit too cliché for my tastes.

Love the one you’re with by Jennifer Peel
4/5 After dealing with a rough patch that lasted for years, Kasie and Jake decide to take a break for the time being before deciding whether or not to divorce. Five months later, drama ensues when Kasie’s former classmate drags them into a reality show for Nashville’s well-to-do, claiming that Jake was the one who got away. Kasie has to decide if she’s ready to say goodbye or fight for their relationship, even if it involves a rather larger tv audience. Over-the-top and campy, this was a lot of fun to read!

Love will save the day by Kirsty Greenwood
2/5 Down on her luck Bess is searching for another job as a personal trainer. After her card is declined on a 5 pound purchase, a handsome man, Henry, mistakes her for the person who saved his life four weeks prior. In desperation, she asks him if he could use her as a personal trainer. He accepts and even offers her a place to stay. Tomfoolery ensues. Lots of miscommunication and deception, in a way that I’m not a fan.

Love for Sale by Whitney Dineen
2/5 Emily is “not like other girls.” Literally how she introduces herself in the first few pages. That first chapter came across so obnoxious against those who like make-up, had plastic surgery, and hair extensions that it almost got me to stop ready but I kept on. (This theme is repeated multiple times throughout the story) Emily does seem to have some sort of sixth sense that helps her find homes that lead to love for her clients. Jonathan Silver, head of a movie studio, asks to be her next client. In a turn of events, the two swap houses for the foreseeable future. It has some fun moments, but it was hard to ignore the obnoxious attitudes of multiple characters and their at times ridiculous actions.

Love the Viscount and Me by Aven Ellis
4/5 McKenna grabs the chance to be a nanny for Rose’s four kids in England, hoping living there will help her connect to her English roots and deceased mother. It just so happens that Rose’s brother is Lord Phillip Coventry, Viscount Brookstone. After an accident on her first day the job, McKenna is able to connect with Phillip on a deeper level than expected. A very cute! (This is tied in with the author’s modern royals series, though you don’t need to read those to enjoy this one, but if you would like to explore the relationships of some characters introduced towards the end of the book, you can).

Little Lost Love Letter - Shari L. Tapscott
5/5 Lucy moves to Arizona to start work as a replacement so her pregnant aunt can go on maternity leave. Her first day started as a disaster, two wrong shoes, fire alarms, forgetting her debit card and cash at the coffee shop—all before work even starts! A man grudgingly paid for her coffee, but to say they got off on the wrong foot is an understatement. Turns out that Ryland is her new boss. Ryland thinks Lucy is a hot mess, but he can’t help but be drawn to her. Perhaps this temporary position can be come a little more…permanent. This one was such a delight!

Can’t Forget a Love Like That - Lucy McConnell
3/5 Iris has a standing elevator date (for five months) with the guy working somewhere in the floors above her office. Their chemistry is electric when they kiss, and yet they still haven’t learned each other’s names when he disappears for awhile. Come to find that the gentleman, Reggie, had been in an accident and developed amnesia, remembering only their kiss, and not that they hadn’t ever officially started their relationship. Iris really wants things to work, but is unsure of just where to begin and how much to say. The lack of communication/miscommunication lowered the rating for me, but still enjoyable.

A Very English Love Story - Kate O'Keeffe
4/5 Dating Mr. Darcy—when Phoebe joined the pride and prejudice themed reality dating show, she knew her chance at finding love was slim. When she meets “Mr. Darcy” there’s not even the hint of a spark, but yet she finds herself drawn to the “Mr. Bingley”, Johnathan. This is side story to Love Manor series, which you can enjoy as a standalone, though I do think this might have been more enjoyable if I had read the main series first. I might still give the rest of the series a try!

Love, Lies, & Limo Rides - Erin Huss
3/5 When the latest episode of the dating show, the One, Anna produces results in a runaway bride killing her potential groom, Anna has a mess to clean up. This mess results in her soon-to-be ex, the head of security, getting fired. The next season ends up with one mess after another. Another her bachelor receives multiple death threats, she turns to her ex to try to find the person sending the threats. Enjoyable, but a bit much for me at times.

Thanks for the Love - Melissa Baldwin
3/5 Gabby just moved to Miami to start over: new job, new apartment, new roommates, new hot neighbor… maybe he will be the key to help heal her heart after catching her ex-fiancé having an affair with her ex-best friend. It was sweet, but felt a little short. The author is expanding the series with Gabby’s roommates if you want a bit more.

Love at the Masquerade - Stephanie Fowers
4/5 A gothic vibe. Told that the house that she is staying at has a history of vampires, Mia can’t help feeling a little spooked that first night. Particularly when she hears someone downstairs, when she’s supposed to be alone. The owner’s stepson, Harker, is as intrigued about Mia as she is about him. Knowing that his stepfather is just trying to set them up, leading to a business merger, Harker decides to ask Mia on a tour to show her some “real vampires” in an attempt to dissuade affection. But things don’t always go according to plan.

Vision of Love - Kathryn R. Biel
4/5 Tabitha and Henderson meet on an unexpected date… Tabby had been planning to spend time with her best friend on a double date of sorts, but Angie and her husband weren’t able to make it back to New York in time. Tabitha is Tabby Cat from the superstar group Sassy Cats, while Henderson was sent to the restaurant to try to convince an act to perform at the Edison—an act he’s pretty sure is Tabitha, though he doesn’t recognize her as Tabby. It becomes pretty apparent that they two are a bit mistaken as to the other’s identity.
