Lore Olympus: Volume Two by Rachel Smythe
4.0
I have mixed feelings about Lore Olympus. It's certainly an addictive story with incredible artwork, and I love the creative retelling of classic mythology. Transposing it into a more modern setting with cell phones and cars largely works. The things that are off-putting to me are the massive age gap between Hades (age 2,000+) and Persephone (age 19), the fact that he's now literally her boss and how that makes the power dynamic even more unequal, how naïve she is, and how creepy and toxic Apollo is. Still a lot of those dynamics aren't unfair extrapolation from the mythology and in some ways Smythe's retelling actually exposes how problematic those things were in the first place. I just have a hard time really shipping Hades and Persephone and am a little icked out by where I know the story is going.
