I have a lot of thoughts on this one and I don’t want to give anything away so I’m marking it all as spoilers. Briefly, I wasn’t liking the first 50ish% of the book but then it picked up for me and I was hooked. I mostly didn’t like it because I didn’t like the main character, Megan. Her inner monologue was annoying and didn’t feel real. It also felt like there were too many moving parts that weren’t connecting. I still have questions that I think could have been answered (see below with spoilers). But overall, an enjoyable thriller with a twist that shocked me.
Am I supposed to be left with questions? I guess so. right? Cause if Megan doesn’t have everything figured out then how can the reader. But that stinks, cause I still want to know if Ben was involved, who was sending those threatening texts to “Nat” while in Megan’s apartment, and what the hell is up with the Beckett family? Why have the storyline with the brother? It went nowhere. I kept waiting for him to be more involved than he was.
I know Declan was fake (and by the way, I had thought Nat might not be telling the truth either when Megan went on her fb page) but was any of it true? I mean was she in an abusive relationship with Ben? Is that one of the reasons Megan left him?? It felt like she was hinting towards a dark/abusive side to him at the end.
Ok. Now in hindsight I feel like I could have made the connection but holy shit I can’t believe Nat was Kate. The whole time I’m thinking to myself that these two storylines need to be connected somehow but I never thought they were the same people. I think the main reason why I didn’t have that line of thought was because I didn’t understand the time line up until that point — around 72% is when it all lined up. Before then, I thought everything was happening in the present. Since I listened to the audio it’s hard for me to ascertain if that was intentional or if I just didn’t pick up on the two time lines.
I had bad feelings about Luke from the beginning. So that whole thing wasn’t surprising.
Honestly, I’m still not over the Nat/Kate revelation. It was handled so well. I literally gasped out loud while driving. Mouth on the floor.
Oh and one more thing. I didn’t like the addition of the prologue. It was a red herring and it was repeated word for word later in the book. I don’t think we needed it at all.
