This book is superb. James Witherspoon is a bigamist with 2 daughters, one from each wife, and so the stage is set for a high-suspense family drama. We first here the story of the illegitimate first daughter, Dana. Dana’s childhood is sad, she’s constantly wondering why she gets the second-best of everything. Chaurisse is the second and legitimate daughter. Chaurisse is self conscious and lonely. When the two girls befriend each other, they set in motion a suspenseful collision course that will change both families forever.
Tayari Jones prose is simple, yet lyrical. The skill with which the suspense was developed, along with beautiful passages made me want to both speed ahead, and slow down to take it all in. The ending made me, sad, angry, and hopeful. I loved this book.
