"Then gradually, we became something like men again."

A hard read, but an important one. This "journal made book" sheds light on the life of a German combat soldier in WWI. It's brutal, gory, depressing, and will put the reader as close to those battle trenches as they can get without having actually been there.

This book was recommended to me by my husband who, as a combat veteran himself, can relate to this man's experience better than most of us ever will. If you are interested in WWI history, consider picking up this fictionalized first-hand account told from the perspective of a soldier who, like so many others, had to grow up quickly, and partake in conditions and brutality that no human being should - all in the name of war.
