Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
5.0
Okay so I’m feeling like a right ass about this, but like Romeo and Juliet is actually really good ?? Like possibly the best Shakespeare play ?? And like everyone has known that for the past 500 odd years and I for some reason just put it off for a quarter of a century ????
No I mean to be fair to myself, I didn’t prioritise this (it’s my 19th play) because I don’t love reading books when I already know the story very well. Nothing personal, I never thought it’d be bad.
But I also didn’t think it’d be this GOOD! This is so peak Shakespeare, the writing is sublime and really only this subject matter could lend itself to the sheer poetry and romance. Yes it’s arguably a lot more shallow than say, Othello, but that’s its beauty. This is just so sweet. There’s no baddie, just a sad fate.
I think what really won me over though was the insane amount of iconic one liners. Every single page has these beautiful metaphors or just lovely dialogue, it’s bang on writing throughout. Maybe that’s like reverse pop culture influence but I don’t really care. When it’s good it’s good. Don’t need to hate it just because it’s popular. Anyway, I think this is currently my favourite play (although Othello is still very much up there. Def beats Hamlet though).
