Partials by Dan Wells

4.0

"Partials" was the September pick for Booknerdmille's book club, Reading in the Rain Book Club, on Goodreads. The book has been on my to-read list for ages now but I never got a chance to read it. I'm more than happy that it was chosen by all of our members, because it's a great read! Dan Wells created such an amazing world, one that makes you wonder if it could happen in real life. It's not even as absurd as you may think it is.

The human race is about to be extinct because of the virus RM. No one has a cure and every human baby is going to die for sure. And if that's not already enough there are also the Partials - engineered organic beings that look exactly like every other human - are a constant threat.

"Happiness is the most natural thing in the world when you have it, and the slowest, strangest, most impossible thing when you don't."

The story is following Kira Walker, a young and brave woman that believes she can find a cure for RM and save mankind from extinction. Doesn't sound that easy, right? Well, it isn't. But Kira is determined to find a solution and prooves in various situations that she's more human than most of the people, these days. She knows about the risks and what could happen but she's still willing to give her own life. I have to say that I could easily bond with Kira. She was tough and strong and I liked her a lot. She still had some "flaws" and there were a few situations where I didn't understand her actions but overall, she was an awesome character.

I didn't really have a connection to the other characters, except for Jayden and Samm. I liked them immediately (especially Jayden) and wanted to read more about them. I'm sure we will get to see Samm in the second book again, and I'm already excited! Kira and he were the ones that really wanted to change the world they live in. They understood that they need each other to survive and I guess that's also one point why I liked them so much, like as a team. They are both strong and don't need anyone to rely on and can work great together. I also think - or at least I hope! - that there will be a more intense connection between those 2 because I think they would be a good match. PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ROMANCE, DAN!

"If you can't know the truth, said Isolde, live the most awesome lie you can think off."

The book was divided into 3 parts and while the first one was a bit slow and hard to get into, the other ones were the complete opposite! The story gripped me and I didn't want to stop reading because I had to know what happens next. It's action-packed and fast-paced and there were even a few surprises!

I'm really looking forward to read the next book and I will DEFINITELY pick it up soon! I would recommend this to everyone who likes dystopia but also science/biology/anatomy because there's also a lot about these in the books. Either way, it's totally worth a read and you should all check it out, if you haven't already!
