American Revolutions: A Continental History, 1750-1804 by Alan Taylor

5.0

Really great look at the forces leading up to the revolution, why it eventually succeeded, and the paths not taken. Taylor does an excellent job examining why the Loyalists, Anti-Federalists, and other historical losers actually had really great points and were better than the winners in some senses. Our founding fathers come across as alternatively paternal and petulant depending on who they were dealing with. You really get a sense of how much the decision-making at the time was warped by racism, and how all sides had to contend with the limits to their own emotional imaginations.
