and yes, whatever Ilyan was lonely for a long time. Boo hoo. Ryland was legit turtured (physically and emotionally) so his father could break his mind enough to make him think that the love of of life was a threat. Something that they later did to Joclyn too, to also break their connection on her end. I just want them t find their way back to eachother!.
Also, the whole Jos being a Drak felt a little too much like "lets give her MORE power for absolutely no reason at all, except to make her less useless". I don't really like this whole lets empower a whining coward. Everything would've been a lot easier to accept IMO if she had that fire inside her from the beginning. The desire to make a difference, to help others, even when her physical abilities weren't enough to do so. Plus everything magic related comes too easy for her.
And how on earth could she not tell from the beginning that Ilyan's plan was to bond himself to her? How naive can you be? Seriously!
I liken Thom and Dramin. They were fun characters.

But, back to what I first said, go TeamRyland. I wanna see him happy.
