The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert A. Caro

challenging medium-paced

5.0

A very long book. Listened to it as an audio book, and it chocks in at a bit over 60 hours. A very enjoyable book. Probably my favorite book ever. Very well written. Really pulls you and makes things interesting. I will try to write a proper, more detailed review at some point, but a few thoughts:
- very fair book. Acknowledges Robert Moses accomplishments and strengths while chronicling his mistakes, manipulations and ruthlessness
- Crazy that how much Moses shaped New York
- Shows power of plans, having things ready to go. Being perceived as expert and "non-political"
- Only time Moses ran for office, he got trounced, but he ended up having more power than the elected officials
- Holding 12 different positions at time!
- One downside to audiobook is that would have been nice to have a map to refer to
- Make me want to visit New York
- Crazy how much Moses shaped New York. I guess New York could have had much better public transit, though still better than most US cities
- Only person who could remove Moses from power was governor and also one of richest people in world (although Moses was old at time so might have happened anyways?)
- Good thing that people age and retire/die. Otherwise would be stuck with bad leaders forever
