Creative Quest by Questlove

4.0

I'd give this something between 3.5 and 4 stars. There were definitely things he articulated that I have thought about before and maybe it's because I'm a little advanced in age (similar age of Questlove). Life experience is a mighty teacher if you are open to listening and learning. Questlove mentions a study about people being less creative when alert; people were more creative when they were less alert. That really hit me as I recalled a former drum teacher pointing out how our group played better after being pushed to exhaustion. I think it's not about being alert or exhausted, just being relaxed and open to whatever. I think that's where creativity truly exists -- when one stops trying and starts allowing things to happen. I highly recommend the audiobook. Questlove narrates it and he's a great storyteller, plus he includes musical examples of the things he talks about.
