I have been reading these stories off and on for over a year, but I finally went ahead and read them all front to back now, too.

I had a professor in Milan who always gave Carver as an example of quintessentially American writing. Carver writes spare, thoughtful, clean sentences in contrast, say, to Calvino's lengthy and complex ones.
