The Beast by Katee Robert

4.5

I am so irritated I didn't read this when I bought the book and just let it sit there till now. There were so many things I loved about this story but what really shined for me was the characterization, particularly for the two men.

I expected Beast to be the bigger of the two purely based on my imagery of the Beast character from the film and from the fact that his name implies his ferocity. I love that we were the smaller more ethereal beauty of the two as it was so unexpected it actually took a little while for me to rewire my brain to it. His somehow being the most emotionally intelligent of the three was the icing on the cake.

Gaeton being such an emotional wreck was a time and a half. I connected deeply with his problem of letting his insecurity and fear prevent him from going for what he wants, it was like looking into a very uncomfortable mirror and I hated it which is why it was so good. Gaeton being the more emotional of the two was such a great switch on the character as in the film he was pure toxic masculinity and I loved seeing him just be a big insecure dangerous teddy bear who just wanted cuddles and reassurance of love.

It was incredibly frustrating watching everyone blame Isabelle for the situation. While they acknowledged their shared wrongdoing among themselves all throughout the book we essentially saw people get on her case about what she did to them without really seeing her also get support. Yes, she has her sisters but since they weren't characters we interacted with face to face like with Tink or Aurora whatever support they provide (which wasn't very emotional and more righteous anger) felt removed. I tend to project myself onto the characters I'm reading so it was hard to watch everyone treat her as if she had cheated on them when they were all consenting adults in a situation that just ended in a shitty way.
