A Silent Death by Peter May

3.0

I loved the author's Lewis series and this sounded so different that I was interested to see how it worked. It's doubtful, given the ending, that this will become a series, and as a one-off this was not bad. The battle of wits between two men clearly on the Asperger's continuum, one blaming everyone but himself for his losses and the other without the filter that says "maybe you don't need to be the smartest in the room" is one I would have liked to see continue.

There were a few too many POVs, not all of which were interesting. For example, Ana's life as a deaf-mute could have been told faster, and more time spent with her in the now, how she navigates her daily life, would have helped. The setting wasn't used to its fullest either: we're in Spain, near Gibraltar, and that scenery and the culture could have come through a bit more.
