Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi
5.0
Wow. Wow! This book was such a good picture to me that 5 star reads don’t need to be shocking, they don’t need to even be earth-shatteringly heartbreaking. They can just be beautiful and hit *just* the right spot.
I loved
I loved
- The contrast of Gifty’s life story and how it relates to her study in the lab. It’s almost like one is a picture or metaphor of the other.
- The storyline of Gifty’s family moving from Ghana to Alabama. How the family was so hurt by treatment form their neighborhood, but loved it all the same.
- Gifty’s search for faith, and some of her thoughts on the subject (similar to Beautiful World, Where Are You). I especially related to how she spoke of her lack of religion, but the ever present remnants of her faith.
Overall, a great read and I am SHOCKED I enjoyed it as much as I did! Definitely for a very niche reader as it can get pretty scientific, while also very emotional and character-driven.
