Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

5.0

*4.5 stars

Honestly? This was brilliant! I loved the first book already and this one was as good, maybe even a tiny bit better, I'm not sure. The writing was great, as usual, and the characters are so, so good! I mean, how can you not love/hate them? Very well-developed and awesome!

Also: Am I the only one who's constantly thinking of Dorian and how HE felt while watching Chaol and Celaena dance, flirt, look at each other and do all those things? Seriously?! I haaaated that Sarah J. Maas made him witness all this and even though I already know she doesn't care about our feels - like OH MY GOOOOD - I wished he wouldn't have been so exposed to those two. I really felt sorry for him and wanted to cuddle and hug him quite a lot. *sigh*

"I worry because I care. Gods help me, I know I shouldn't, but I do. So I will always tell you to be careful, because I will always care what happens."

Speaking of ... I wasn't a huge fan of Chaol in the first book. I'm still not but I have to admit that he is indeed kinda cute and almost a bit swoon-worthy. He treated Celaena well and was there for her whenever she needed someone by her side. He fought for her, supported her and gave her a lot, so ... yes, I liked him.

But then there's that turning point. That horrible, absolutely terrible twist that ripped my heart in tiny little pieces. I'm still not sure if I already processed this properly because ... just no. No, no, no, no, nooooooo! How dare you, Sarah? HOW DARE YOU?! *cries in corner*

"To escape death, she'd become death."

Everything changed and while Celaena's and Chaol's relationship wasn't my favorite part of the book - by far not! - I still felt heartbroken. I mean, everything was fine at first but then it wasn't anymore. Nothing was the same and I just sat there and couldn't believe how it happened THAT fast. Celaena completely changed but was still the same ... kind of. This "new", darker side of her is different and maybe even a little scary to some people but then there are the ones who understand her. Who are there for her and help her through this hard time - I'm totally talking about my precious Dorian here - and who don't want to change her one bit because they love her so much. Gosh, I just love this guy.

I loved the new twists in this book ... magic, is all I'm going to say! I was really surprised but liked Sarah's ideas a lot, they just seemed to fit and made sense. The action scenes were all AMAZING. Everything was thrilling and exciting, so I couldn't even stop reading because I constantly wanted to know what would happen next! The Throne of Glass series is highly addictive, just bear that in mind when you start it! You won't get enough of it!

"Some things you hear with your ears. Others, you hear with your heart."

And the ending? OH MY GOODNESS! I knew about that one specific twist due to some spoilers I accidentally read but that didn't bother me too much. I'm not sure what to think of it all but I guess it'll turn out good in the end? I really hope so!

I'm very, very excited for Heir of Fire now and might even start it immediately. Although, maybe I should wait for The Assassin's Blade and read that first? Hmmmm. We'll see. Just let me recommend this series to you. It's amazingly written, has lots of great characters in it and a world that just draws you in. Give it a chance, if you haven't started it yet!
