Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
1.0
Type of read: Commuter Read.
What made me pick it up: Part of the TN READS Challenge prompts for September is reading a challenged or banned book. I purposely looked up books that were challenged/banned in the state of Tennessee. Not only is the entire Simon Snow series one of the most challenged book series in the state, but Rainbow Rowell is one of the most challenged authors in the state.
Overall rating: Gahhhhhhh. I wanted 'Carry On' to be amazing and wonderful and all the reasons why banned books are banned books and instead, I feel like I got a half-thought-out, sad attempt at comedic fan fiction for another extremely popular wizarding world. Here's some things that I absolutely couldn't stand about 'Carry On:'
▪️There were way too many pop culture references relied on over actual writing.
▪️We hate Baz but we're obsessed with Baz and we want to know where Baz is at all times and we really want to know why Baz isn't there because Baz is Baz and...Baz...did I say Baz? Because Simon is ALL. ABOUT. BAZ.
▪️Why is the bad guy called a 'Humdrum?' How am I supposed to feel like this is a monster who is going to try to kill all magick (don't get me started on the spelling) kind? Yes, yes, I know they then go through in chapter 16 and explain how it got its name but all I can think of is Heffalumps and obviously, that's probably not what Rowell wanted us to incision when we pictured the Humdrum.
▪️"Magick words are tricky..." SAYS THE PERSON WHO JUST TRIED TO CAST A SPELL THAT RELIED ON THE WORDS "SCOOBY DOOBY DOO, WHERE ARE YOU?" What in the actual frick. It's not like you're trying to say wingardium leviosa or anything like that.
