The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller

2.0

10/12/21 ☆☆☆☆

Past Brii liked this book a WHOLE lot more than present Brii. I wish I would have written a review 3 years ago just so I could compare where my head and my heart were then compared to now because I really did not love this book this time around. The opposite happened when I reread Levensellers Daughter of he Pirate King series earlier this year, so i is absolutely not the author.

The biggest issue I had going into this book was, unfortunately, Alessandra. I loved that this book started off with her killing her lover. I was like, woah, this character is going to be so badass and strong and fantastic. And… I rally, really reaaaaally didn't like her. (I would almost say hate, but my 4 year old would remind me that we don't say hate in this family)

So, as I was saying, going into a book where you don't like the main character, it kind of makes it hard to enjoy. Alessandra is awful. She's completely self obsessed. She's rude. She's whiny. The character I thought was going to be badass was just a little girl throwing a tantrum because Daddy likes her big sister better. I couldn't. I just, forking, couldn't.

Then we get to the Shadow King. Who just falls for every single trap Alessandra lays for him. He was so pathetic that I couldn't stop rolling my eyes. All that man wants to do is pet his god.

There's zero political intrigue. Politics happen, but it's all in the background, so we aren’t really a part of it. So, at the end of the day, this story is basically a love story, but it's barely even that because there's pretty much no chemistry. Two people pretending to be in love, actually fall in love. it's over done, and cliche, and unfortunately, for me, it just didn't deliver.
