While reading this I could only think about how sad this book is. It gave me a existential feeling. From the start it’s clear that Ireland in this book is going down in a descent to a surveillance state without free will. Every chapter makes the country go deeper into that madness, and you read about how this family gets torn apart and hurt, while not be able to stop or even saved themselves. The message of this book is very relevant in these current times.

I liked that this was written from the perspective of a mother, who sees everything changing around her and is confused when barely anyone is doing something about it. Meanwhile she is desperately trying to salvage what’s left of her family in these changing times.

I was invested in the story, but the writing style didn’t work for me. I missed quotation marks when conversations were happening. Having the dialogue next to each other like sentences is confusing. It felt like some lines were missing a word. Everything felt like run-on sentences. It slowed me down a lot, especially at the start. However most of this got better from the third chapter. I do think this might have worked better with a physical version of the book, instead of an e-book.
