The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

This was a very good book, and I fully understand why it is considered a classic. For starters, I liked how it was told through many characters around Pecola. It was an unusual but effective way of telling the story and giving the reader a broad view of Pecola and her life. I particularly liked Claudia and her perspective. She was so vibrant and confident and an amazing contrast to Pecola. She also some levity to an overall dark book. I also enjoyed the prose of the book. It was beautiful, with so many incredibly impactful lines and moving words. For such a short book it packed a huge emotional punch. Lastly, I liked how it was organized by season, giving a clear marking of the passing of time. All that said, this was still clearly a debut novel. There were some inconsistencies in the storytelling style between characters and perspectives. I also never fully understood the house metaphor and chapters and how that strongly related to the story. But overall this was a very strong book and I am glad to have read it.
