Better Buses, Better Cities: How to Plan, Run, and Win the Fight for Effective Transit by Steven Higashide
5.0
This book is engaging and informative and I hope that all of our public officials will read this. I love how simply organized and clear his argument is, with many relevant examples of cities that are getting it right when it comes to bus transit. This is an issue very important to me--I currently live in an area with terrible public transit (Northern Virginia) and am planning to move to a different city for that reason alone. I love driving, I have a car, but I would prefer to mostly use public transit. Driving is bad for the environment, it's dangerous (especially as our weather gets more and more inclement) and too many cars on the road ruins the livability of our cities. Bus transit is the most efficient and cost-effective form of transportation, and could so easily be made so much better. If buses are frequent, fast, and welcoming, and if it is easy to walk to bus stops and wait at bus stops many people will take public transit, as they do in most other countries. And having good bus transit is critical for equity--people need buses to get to jobs, health care, and education.
