It's one of those intrigues, Vermeer painted a lot of women that are not know. Just every day people. A bakers daughter? A maid? He captured people but we humans gravitate towards beauty and the girl with the (its not a) pearl earring is beautiful. So of course we are curious as to who she is. And so this story came into being. It is what it is, nothing more and nothing less.
