Der Schimmelreiter by Theodor Storm
5.0
TW: ableism, animal cruelty and death, suicide, antiziganism (i think - I’m a bit late on reviewing this)
Look, I’m biased: I have lived in northern Germany long enough to know what scenery is being referenced and to not need the glossary at the back of the book. OF COURSE I am going to love this moody, dark, supernatural and tragic story of ghost horses and the dangers of money and power and the depths of love. The book is short and perfectly wraps up a side of northern Germany that fits so well into Storm‘s broad natural descriptions in a way that you might only get from Lenz‘ Deutschstunde (which is nowhere near as windy and dark and gloomy), so I would recommend anyone interested in broadening their perspective on what constitutes German „culture“.
I wish German movie studios would take some risks with their art direction and cinematography because I think this could be a solid spiritual successor to A24‘s The Lighthouse if done right.
