Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s by Jeff Pearlman
5.0
This book was a lot of fun. I picked it up while watching the HBO series (which is also worth your time). Pearlman did a ton of great reporting that allows him to put together an entertaining and enticing narrative about one of sports' best dynasties. He, of course, gives plenty of page space to the main players like Magic, Kareem, and Bus, but also makes sure you get acquainted with lesser known members of Showtime who were interesting in their own rights. He has some stylistic quirks that I found grating -- namely, he likes to break up quotes (e.g. something like "It was," said Johnson, "the best game of my career") -- but these didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book. Definite recommend for the general sports reader, even if you're not particularly into the Lakers or the NBA.
