Iβm not going to summarize the plot of such a well-known and well-loved book just because I happened to be very late to the party. People did what people do, make greedy, selfish, shortsighted decisions, and things go bad. Oh, and there are dinosaursπ¦
β’
I will say, waiting to read this book until now, when Iβm 42, instead of when it was published and I was 12, didnβt diminish the horror factor. At all. Iβm stating that as a fact, obviously without being able to know how I would have felt had I read this in my childhood, but that doesnβt change my stance.
β’
I might have had nightmares if Iβd read this way back then. Because make no mistake, I absolutely classify this book as horror. Suspense horror, adventure horror, or science fiction horror sure, but you canβt leave off the horror. Itβs violent, gory, and so much fun! Crichton does an amazing job of writing scientific explanations and even charts throughout the novel, while not just keeping my interest, but keeping me on the edge of my seat with nonstop action.
β’
Is it perfect, no. Itβs definitely plot driven and the character development is a bit lacking. But thereβs still enough that we care about who lives and dies. There are characters we love (Grant & Malcolm for me), and hate (Iβm looking at you Nedry).
β’
While you wouldnβt think of Jurassic Park as classic literature, that doesnβt mean itβs without moments of beauty and genius. Malcolmβs speeches are incredible and thatβs how I know Iβm as scared now as I could have ever been from this novel. While the dinosaurs are terrifying, the humans are worse. Reading the quote above while in the middle of a pandemic really drove home what real terror is, what we could do to each other.
β’
Luckily, there are dinosaurs. The way Crichton brought Jurassic Park to life makes for such an amazing adventure that Iβm left feeling awed and anxious to see where he takes us next in The Lost World.
