πŸ¦–Spoiler Free Book ReviewπŸ¦–
β€’
I’m not going to summarize the plot of such a well-known and well-loved book just because I happened to be very late to the party. People did what people do, make greedy, selfish, shortsighted decisions, and things go bad. Oh, and there are dinosaursπŸ¦•
β€’
I will say, waiting to read this book until now, when I’m 42, instead of when it was published and I was 12, didn’t diminish the horror factor. At all. I’m stating that as a fact, obviously without being able to know how I would have felt had I read this in my childhood, but that doesn’t change my stance.
β€’
I might have had nightmares if I’d read this way back then. Because make no mistake, I absolutely classify this book as horror. Suspense horror, adventure horror, or science fiction horror sure, but you can’t leave off the horror. It’s violent, gory, and so much fun!  Crichton does an amazing job of writing scientific explanations and even charts throughout the novel, while not just keeping my interest, but keeping me on the edge of my seat with nonstop action.
β€’
Is it perfect, no. It’s definitely plot driven and the character development is a bit lacking.  But there’s still enough that we care about who lives and dies. There are characters we love (Grant & Malcolm for me), and hate (I’m looking at you Nedry).
β€’
While you wouldn’t think of Jurassic Park as classic literature, that doesn’t mean it’s without moments of beauty and genius. Malcolm’s speeches are incredible and that’s how I know I’m as scared now as I could have ever been from this novel. While the dinosaurs are terrifying, the humans are worse. Reading the quote above while in the middle of a pandemic really drove home what real terror is, what we could do to each other.

Luckily, there are dinosaurs. The way Crichton brought Jurassic Park to life makes for such an amazing adventure that I’m left feeling awed and anxious to see where he takes us next in The Lost World.
