Death Note: Black Edition, Vol. 1 by Tsugumi Ohba
4.0
⠀⠀✧ • ° . ◦ *⠀┊ three and three quarter stars.
⠀i thoroughly enjoyed this... so much that i ran to the library and got the remainder of the series. while this was extremely entertaining... i can’t help but to give it this star rating. it was great but could have been better, i guess.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀” look around you, and all you
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ will see are people the world
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ would be better off without. “
⠀things i really enjoyed:
❥ ┊the premise.
⠀⠀⠀⠀the idea of the the death note has always fascinated me. as someone who has almost no interest in anime or manga i couldn’t help but be beyond intrigued. the ability to write a name & act of death in a notebook is nothing less than clever. even though several years have passed, this is still such an original concept.
❥ ┊the cast.
⠀⠀⠀⠀for what is worth, the cast was pretty enjoyable. i really enjoyed our main character, light. he’s the type of character i love to read about. ryuk is adorable and kind of reminds me of venom. L is the cutest bean i’ve ever seen and i would die for him. i didn’t have any complaints about the side characters as they were all fairly realistic.
❥ ┊the plot.
⠀⠀⠀⠀the plot was pretty solid. i had absolutely no idea what this was about so it couldn’t deviate from expectations & disappoint. i feel like the second volume was a little more bland than the first but it was still extremely interesting.
❥ ┊the thought.
⠀⠀⠀⠀the thought put into this is incredible. many of the actions and choices presented in this are air tight. they’re thought out——fool proof. i know this is kind of applauding a fish for swimming but this story can get pretty complex and i appreciate the author taking the time to think everything through.
⠀things i didn’t enjoy:
❥ ┊missing piece.
⠀⠀⠀⠀this is where things get weird. i don’t have anything to complain about yet i feel as if this could be better. i don’t know why or how but this seems like it’s missing something. maybe i’ll come up with something as i progress in the series but. who knows.
❥ ┊second volume’s plot.
⠀⠀⠀⠀don’t get me wrong, i enjoyed this plot but i wish it was a bit more like the first. i think i just wished the death note was used more or was more of the focus than the investigation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀overall, this was pretty great and a good choice for my first manga. to clarify the ratings, the first volume was about four stars and the second was about three and a half stars. there’s no doubt i’m continuing the series & would recommend this to anyone.
