The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

3.0

If your expectations are in the right place, The Kaiju Preservation Society is an enjoyable Saturday morning cartoon of a book.

I've been in something of a reading rut lately, and Scalzi is a pretty reliable author to get me back on the train. His books generally have creative concepts that are playfully written and breezy to get through, thanks to a heavy focus on dialogue and a general aversion to getting wrapped up in the details of the world. Again, this can be a bad thing if you're looking for some depth, but it's exactly what you want if you're in the market for a Science Fiction beach or airplane read.

The Kaiju Preservation Society is the most extreme example I've seen of this from Scalzi. The characters are featureless, the dialogue is quippy and relies heavily on pop culture references (even if you ignore the obvious Kaiju based ones), and aside from the creative concept, the story is highly predictable and forgettable.

The constant quips and pop culture gags got old fast, and it would have been nice to have a little more character development, but otherwise KPS is exactly what I wanted and needed. Something to get me reading a little every day. Enjoyable, easy, silly, fun. The right book at the right time.
