You Love Me by Caroline Kepnes

4.0

"My girl, my girl
don't lie to me
tell me where did you sleep last night?"

In 'You Love Me', fans of Kepnes's YOU series will find a tamer, more subdued, and (slightly) less murder-y, Joe Goldberg. Forced out and paid off by those that he had come to love in L.A., Joe has found a new home in the Pacific Northwest. Volunteering at the local library, Joe meets head librarian and certified grunge muse, Mary Kay. Joe is taken with Mary Kay but has sworn off meddling and messing and has instead decided to let their "relationship" proceed naturally. But, while Joe might be ready to settle down and build a new life, Mary Kay keeps throwing him curve balls that he might not be able to catch. Just how long can Joe go without orchestrating events? Can he really relinquish control? Or has Joe finally met his match?

'You Love Me', while not nearly as shocking and witty as the previous two books in this series, still shines with a mellower light that presents a more reflective and pensive Joe. His inner monologue, while still barbed, is more forgiving and patient overall. Joe is older, wiser, and more patient...right?

While slow to ease into, 'You Love Me' began to deliver one twist after another and was laced with references to 90s grunge culture throughout. This book is a mood that will resonate with those of us who grew up adjacent to the vibe of the early 90s.
