“You did this you did this you did this”

I started writing the review even before I finished the novel; in my heart I knew that the ending, however it happened, would not change my overall feelings. A beautiful, tragic, cosmic horror experience that came barreling out of left field. At the library, I picked it up because of the scary horsey on the cover. But now, looking back, I think it just appeared in my hand. That kind of constrained insanity is exactly what this book encapsulates. Truly, truly bizarre. Impeccable character design, genuine and delightful dialogue work, and scenes of such vivid, “what the fuck” inducing horror I’ve read in a long time. Wow, wow, wow.

This book was challenging to read and the prose often pretentious. This does not wholly detract from the story, but it was frustrating. I put it down a lot and wasn’t able to truly immerse myself until a little over halfway through. Real glad I stuck it out.

5/5 I still don’t know what the fuck I just read but boy I’ll be reading more Marino, that’s for sure.
