Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice

I read this book in three sittings. It's compelling.

From a technician's point of view, the book is excellent. It's a very lean book, and nothing is wasted. It also works as a straight-up thriller with some horror elements, and is a welcome change from the typically depressing tone of most post-apocalyptic genre fiction. The only things I think could have been done better would be to include a stronger female character, perhaps as the protagonist. Because there were a number of gendered assumptions that weren't challenged at all in the book. And the book ends rather suddenly, even though there was probably another good 30 to 50 pages of narrative that could have been told. Which makes me think the author ran out of time.
