The Angry Women's Choir by Meg Bignell
5.0
What an absolute joy of a book this is – I know it sounds like a cliché but it really did make my heart sing! It made me laugh, cry, cheer and importantly, made me think about what it means to be woman in the world today.
It’s a tough book to sum up in one paragraph as there are so many themes and beautiful parts to this book, I feel I will not do them justice, but the brief summary is this. The Angry Women’s Choir by Meg Bignell is a story about women rights, friendship and music set in beautiful Tasmania. Focusing on a group of women, all from very different backgrounds but each with their own important story, they come together through the West Moonah Women’s choir. Each are angry about the injustices of women - whether it’s the small ways they are taken for granted in their own lives or the social injustices and expectations that all women still face - and decide to channel their anger into beautiful action.
This book was the February book for The Birds of a Feather Bookclub which I’m part of so I was luck enough last night to discuss this book and Meg generously joined us to answer questions which was amazing. I’m just so blown away that she has been able to craft such an amazing world through these fictional characters and have it effect so many women in different ways (there were 354 book club members in the Zoom discussion I was in). It was absolutely fascinating to hear how the story evolved and what was behind it all.
I do want to highlight, that I ended up listening to this on Audiobook & absolutely WOW, I’m so glad I did! Meg does a stellar job of the narration with accents for each of the characters which given the number of women’s voices in this story I think actually made it easier to follow plus there is beautiful music & songs throughout! I think listening to this one added a whole lot more to the book experience and would highly recommend this option for anyone wanting to pick this one up!
