I absolutely adored this book. It took me about 30 pages to really get into it, but once I was I was completely hooked and did not put it down until I was finished. Overall this was such a beautiful story, I find my only complaint being that the translation, although it seems very spot-on technically, feels slightly disconnected from the original writing. I feel like Chi-Young Kim could have perhaps taken more creative approaches to translating this, and made more of an effort to translate the emotion of the novel as well as just the sentences.
On the other hand, Kang was, for such a short story, a very convoluted character. I loved slowly unpicking his personality and reasons behind his annoyance to these characters around him that we knew little about. I also loved that, once we found out, we got a new glimpse into his past and how the little time he had already spent at Cherry Hill had created such a huge impact on his life.
I also enjoyed the development of his relationship with Sanghun specifically. Although the conclusion of their relationship may not have been as solid as some people may have wanted it, the understanding the two came two was such a nice resolution to the tension between them both. Kang referencing throughout how he could see himself in Sanghun certainly tugged on my heart.
I also liked the ending with Songi, and how he had managed to accept his past and begin to forgive the actions of others, and opened himself up once again to a better relationship with her. Songi as a character really pulled me in, and how even being so far gone with her dementia that she had remembered Kang enough to bring back the box of items she kept to remember him by after his return.
