My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell
5.0
I really don't know what to say. I have read some of the criticism that this book has received, but in my opinion, it does not romanticize sexual abuse or teacher-student "affairs".
This novel is not an easy read. The subject matter is terrible. Yet, I think it is well written, nuanced, and layered. Once I started, I couldn't stop reading.
I saw somebody in the questions on this book's page on Goodreads, saying that it was never explained what it was in Vanessa's childhood that made her "such easy pickings" and I want to throw my computer through the window. Just... no.
I have many thoughts, too many thoughts, but not that many coherent ones at this time. Just think carefully before you read this book, if you're considering it. It will be difficult.
Five stars mainly because I can't think of a justification for any rating. I am rattled.
