Ashael Rising by Shona Kinsella
5.0
Not sure why it took me so long to start this book but once I did it was very difficult to put down. The only reason it took me as long as it did to read was because I had to force myself to limit my reading time so I could get things like studying and errands done during the end of semester.
The characters are captivating, the story is engaging, the world that Kinsella has built has depth and warmth. Probably one of my favourite things about the worldbuilding is that Kinsella didn't ignore religion, or simplify it into "this race worships this one god and this other race worships this other one!" as is so common in fantasy. There's actual complexity and pantheons and traditions and practices and magic, and it really hits the right buttons for me when it comes to religion in fantasy stories.
Anyway, I don't want to give spoilers, but I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the next book so I can continue my adventure with the characters I got to know in this one.
