Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
4.0
Part One
I didn't like them to begin with.
Nick is a Class A Douche Bag and Amy is a pushover under the pretense of a strong woman.
As the story progresses, I realised Nick and Amy are absolute morons. The subtle difference in their experiences struck me but I leaned more on Amy's side just because Nick didn't seem credible. No one does, when they use words like fuckdoll for their student (gag!)
At some point, I was questioning my understanding. If the husband killed his wife, there won't be a story right? So where was the catch? I kept reading despite hating these two!
Part Two
This is when I knew I'm reading about an unhinged couple. I respect the meticulous planning but how does she not realise there needs to be something seriously wrong for one to fake their own murder? That too to revenge your cheating-good-for-nothing husband. He ain't worth the effort, but who's going to tell her?
This part dragged with few irrelevant characters and Nick pulling himself up to do his bit as the pyscho couple that they are. People from the past stepped in to assure us that Amy was a psycho like we couldn't get that already.
Part Three
Here things heated up. Ms Amazing Amy returns to her husband. And guess what, she's killed AND framed another man just because she was bored of her life. I hate her, people should not hold this much power but I wait it out, continue reading in the hopes that justice might be served. But this is mirroring the real world and criminals like her often go unpunished, so we have an open ending.
I hate Amy. I hate Nick. But do I hate Gone Girl? Maybe Not. It was an eager read albeit a frustrating one, as both these narrators are deliberately unreliable. Both of them fuck with each other and fuck with your mind, so you never know what's real.
Writing
Deliberate unreliability keeps the reader guessing and invested, so that did well for this book. But please don't use weird phrases that are bound to get outdated, I understood less than half of those. Kindly swear less, if I hear fucking bitch one more time, I'm going to smash a window. And someone please stop Diary Amy from setting scenes!
Giving it a 3.5 for giving me more trust issues than what I already have.
