We Spread by Iain Reid
3.0
I have a bit of a bad habit of adding a lot of books to my "To Read" pile. Some are recommendations from friends, others come from various books lists and still more are suggested by various book groups that I have joined. Unfortunately, what happens too often is that by the time I get around to reading a book, I have completely forgotten
What originally compelled me to add it. Sometimes, I also forget what the book is about and end up going in completely blind.
This is exactly what happened with "We Spread". Not only do I not remember why I added this book, but IO had no clue what it was about except that it was a nominee for best horror for 2022.
Unless I completely missed something, I really didn't get a horror vibe from reading this book. There is definitely an undercurrent of anxiety and confusion that got a bit edgy.
Basically, "We Spread" is a story about an elderly artist named Penny who finds herself living in an assisted living facility after her partner of many years passes away. This is where the anxiety and confusion come in and, to be perfectly honest, this is all I knew going in and I don't want to ruin anything by giving out more of the story line. This book received a lot of hype and it is quite good.
This is the first book I have read by Iain Reid and I am looking forward to reading more by him.
