Legends of the Greeks by Ross Macaulay
3.0
[3rd book read for the Cramathon, December 2014.]
This is a good overview of the Greek myths, but is also quite dense, as you might expect. Also, it’s pretty much inevitable that you’ll end up skimming the myths you already know, but reading unfamiliar ones more carefully – luckily each chapter is quite short (apart from the one for the Odyssey). It is also helpful if you are confused by disparities and contradictions you’ve found in some areas of the mythological canon (the various versions of the world’s creation, for instance, are all listed separately). The writing style, however, is fine, and the notes the author gives are helpful for further reading (or, in my case, reminding me that I need to read the Metamorphoses and the Theogony).
