Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond
5.0
For all of the struggle and bleakness Evicted presents, it is also an incredible call to action. This book does not allow any room for apathy or dismissal. There are no comforting words here to soothe the ache of the injustices described, only a raw and real examination of the systematic disenfranchisement that the impoverished (specifically impoverished black women and men) face and how those living outside of poverty neglect the most vulnerable in their community simply by refusing to acknowledge them.
Anybody looking to understand how expensive being poor truly is should read this book. Anybody who already understands but wants a more nuanced examination of how cyclical poverty is should read this book. Anybody who has never experienced the perils of poverty should read this book. Anybody who wants to make this world a better place should read this book. Everybody should read this book.
