I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes

Did not finish book. Stopped at 11%.
So I DNF’d this book after about 100 pages because I just could not get into it. I was trying to convince myself to get to page 200 at the very least since this book is 800+ pages, but I gave in.

Usually I'd give a summary of what this book is about, but to be honest, I was so confused about what was going on pretty much the whole time.

The first few chapters were interesting. A woman is found dead in her room, dissolved in a bathtub and there seems to be little to no evidence. Then detective whatever-his-name-is comes in and starts pulling things together out of thin air Sherlock Holmes style. A little cliché but still interesting nonetheless.

Then suddenly we're talking about a book he's written and a bunch of other stuff from his past that I literally could not care in the slightest about. Every time I read something, I just could not see the relevance it had to the story. I understand learning about a characters background, however at least make it interesting to read. It was pretty much all word vomit telling about one thing then the other and there's just nothing to grip you at all.

In addition to all the rambling, the author keeps telling you how amazingly great the Pilgrim is and how he's so smart and good at everything (one of my character pet peeves honestly) but then shows nothing to actually support all of that. I also don’t think there’s very much to this character. He is extremely generic and he just seems to lack anything that can help you as a reader to connect with him.

Overall, I think this book is very overhyped. This book is advertised and sold as a thriller but if you're looking for something to actually thrill you and keep you interested, I don't think this is the book for you unless you want to read through pages and pages of word vomit without any action. It’s a shame because the blurb had me very intrigued but the actual contents of the book does not do it any justice.
