FMC, Pheby Delores Brown, is the absolute definition of strength, courage, smarts, love, and hope. Her character was written so dang on well that you can feel the emotions through the book and audio. There were times i took a quick break just to think about everything our ancestors had to go through. I don’t know if i could have made it. The things told between these pages are literally heartbreaking and I’ll never understand how humans could be so cruel. However, my people made it because all they knew how to do was fight.

Pheby was a mother through and through. She reminds me of my mom that will do anything to protect her babies and anyone she loves. From writing down those girls story, nursing her first love and making sure her children knew each other. This story is remarkable and everyone should get their hands on it.

Honorable mention: Birdie is my girl. That’s what you call loving who you are and standing for what’s right. Then making a change.

Quotes:
-“Whites always want to lay wit’ us and leave us wit’ the problems.”
-“I told myself I could cry for one minute; that was all Mama made way for. One minute of sorrow and then back to a straight face, a stiff back and work.”
-“Even though whit men do not consider us women fully human, they cannot stop lusting for our flesh.” “Rest assured, you are his prized yellow wife.”
-“Beauty is a curse for a slave girl.”
