I decided to read Saving 6 after finishing the books about Joey’s sister, Shannon. I was sad to let go of Johnny and Shannon but I was kind of exited to read Joey’s books. He was such a great brother and I really enjoyed his girlfriend in Shannon’s POV.
Saving six is a story about Joey (who is abused by his father and does everything for his siblings) and about Aoife. They have had a thing for each other since they were twelve but Joey did his best to resist her as not only did, she date someone else but he also knew that she deserved someone better than him.
This is unpopular opinion but I did not like Aoife most of the book. I felt bad for her for having to deal with Joey’s addiction but I also felt she was so unfair to Joey. Aoife dated someone else for YEARS and then acted all jealous when she even heard a rumor of him with another girl.
I couldn’t really get into the romance as I didn’t like the heroine most of the time but I loved how even just seeing her brightened his day and even with her trust issues with men, she knew that she could trust him.
I know a lot of people in booktok wanted Joey’s mom to have her own book but this book just made me hate her even more. Joey was always cleaning her messes and she kept choosing her husband over all of her kids over and over again and then even had the guts to call Joey and his father alike. All this while praising the son who left. I agreed with Aoife, that she was the worst of them all. Joey’s mom might be victim but she did nothing to save her children. This woman had the guts to call Joey’s name when her husband was beating her and then let him take the fall of beating the said husband.
Aoife’s attitude towards Joey’s siblings make me so sad. Like, yes, she wanted better for Joey but it seemed like she had such a great relationship with his siblings but she only became friends with Shannon because she meant so much to Joey and wanted him to leave all them behind.
I hope to see more of Joey’s friends. We didn’t get to see them as much as I wanted but I enjoyed every time we did.
Tony might have been a horrible husband but I thought he was such a great dad, even to Joey.
I lived for the little moments with Joey’s siblings and the scene with Gibsie and Johnny! I had no idea they met before Shannon met Johnny.
All in all, I could have lived well without ever reading this book but it did have its moments. But I will still read the sequel as I want to see Johnny and Shannon’s relationship through Joey’s eyes. At times I was having a great time but most of the time I was tempted to skim as I didn’t care about the romance.
