Not much to say about this one. I was just bored. I enjoyed the start, and thought it was an interesting choice by the author to make sure the reader never knows the MC's real name.
Other than that, this book simply couldn't grab my interest, and I felt it was way too similar to the Poppy War. Our MC ages rapidly, but never really seemed to develop a personality, so it was hard to cheer for her. Around the 80 page mark, we are introduced to other characters, and I didn't care for them either.
The story has a large focus on imperialism, focusing on the Mongolian invasion of China. Our MC is Chinese, and the other POV's we got were from the Mongol side. The concept was great, having this historical fiction feel, but I can't express enough how bored I was. Fight scenes would be over so fast, character development felt non existent due to how rapidly changes occured, and it was hard to connect with any part of the story.
I can't say that this book copies The Poppy War, but it felt too similar. Our MC was very similar to Rin, there were characters named Altan and Chaghan, a hand was also lost, and the entire theme is based on imperialism/invasion.
The writing was also simply servicable. Rather straight forward and to the point, which isn't a bad thing, but it definitely read like a debut.
Sadly, this one just wasn't for me.
