I Hear the Sirens in the Street by Adrian McKinty
5.0
Adrian McKinty's "I Hear the Sirens in the Street" blends noir crime fiction and historical storytelling. Set in 1982 Northern Ireland, the volatile narrative is as much about its place and time as it is about the central mystery.
Detective Inspector Sean Duffy is an intriguing and complex character who navigates the labyrinthine politics of a divided Belfast with a sharp wit and a weary resolve. Duffy's investigation into a gruesome murder — the discovery of a torso in a suitcase — is not just a puzzle to be solved but a lens through which the reader explores the tensions and challenges of The Troubles.
McKinty evokes a strong sense of place, with vivid and atmospheric descriptions capturing the grit and grey of a city under siege. Yet, amidst the tension, there are moments of dark humour that bring depth and balance to the story.
The writing features a keen eye for detail and sharp dialogue, elevating the story beyond a typical police procedural. As with the first book in the series, the novel entertains with its intelligence, originality, and emotional impact.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ 1/2
