Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie

I absolutely adored this book which I read in one sitting. It tells the story of three siblings of Pakistani-British ethnicity- Isma, the eldest and mother figure, and Aneeka and Pervaiz the twins. You found out early in the book that their father is a Jihadist who died following capture and transfer to Guantanamo Bay. The main focus of the story is Pervaiz who is groomed and ends up fighting for ISIS in Syria but the book deals with so much. The story is gripping, beautifully written and really makes you think. The characters are well drawn and complex. You can’t always agree with the decisions they make but you can see how they came to make them. I would highly recommend this book

I would add it is a retelling of the Greek myth of Antigone. I did not know this story well and I don’t feel that impacted on my enjoyment of the book. However, having since read about the Antigone myth, the ending of Home Fire makes more sense
