Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

5.0

This is one of the most well produced audio books I have ever listened to. And it's read by the author! It is almost like you are listening to a radio show. There are even funny footnotes and commercial breaks.
⠀⠀
This is a story about a group of beauty queens who are in a plane crash on an "abandoned" island. It is a surrealist satire that comments on sexuality, reality TV, advertising, gender, politics, and more. Each of the characters is distinct and well developed, and Bray gives a great voice to each in the audio.
⠀⠀
I do not agree with all the points I think Bray was trying to make in this book, but recently my pastor talked about not just seeking to consume information that confirms our prejudices and biases. He spoke about how we need to listen to everyone and then go back to the Bible and see if those views hold up. This is me listening to a different view.
⠀⠀
Even if you aren't normally a fan of YA, I encourage you to listen to this book (because I do think the audio is better than reading the physical copy).
